Day 12: Someone who influenced you to travel abroad

Posted in Uncategorized

Somehow I feel like it has always been in my soul to travel and go as far as possible, long before I even knew what a passport or a frequent flyer membership was. But I guess it must have come from somewhere and I’ll give that honor to my mother, Connie Thomas. Although she didn’t travel out of the country when I was young, she did often draw from her experiences of growing up in the Bronx, NYC which exposed her to neighbors and friends from all over the world. Mom was always interested in different cultures and languages, music and food and I think those interests passed on to me at a young age. She must have planted the seed that sprouted into my gypsy spirit.

As a little girl I remember being obsessed with France and wanting nothing more than to visit that far off land (was that because mom and I used to make French crepes together in the kitchen on weekend mornings?). I remember being excited for 8th grade to start because that’s when our school allowed you to start taking foreign language classes (was that because of the Spanish phrases and songs mom used to teach me as a little girl?). And if you read last Sunday’s post (http://theressomuchtosee.blogspot.com/2011/08/day-9-song-you-like-from-another.html) you know where my love of Brasil and Brazilian music came from.

So thanks, mom! And remember, next time you say that I’m on the road too much, that it is all your fault! 🙂
