What's on my List – Part 2

Posted in Uncategorized

Following up from my Part 1 list, here’s some more tunes that keep me going – both when I’m on the road and when I’m just wishing that I was.

11. So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright by Simon & Garfunkle – OK…maybe not what you’d expect to see on this list but first I’m a huge S&G fan…and just Paul on his one as well. I had this on my CD player (Yep, before MP3s) in Mozambique just as I was falling asleep in my hut on the beach. There was a full moon and gauzy white curtains blowing in the breeze and this haunting tune started playing. I kept playing the track over and over as I watched the stars and felt very small in the world.

12. So Com Voce by the Thievery Corporation – Its Brazilian, its house-y, its chill and upbeat at the same time. How could it not be on the list?

13. St. Petersburg by Brazilian Girls – Love the matter of fact tone in the singer’s voice. I haven’t spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe, but the beat and lyrics and the singer’s voice make me want to take to the streets of Berlin or Prague.

14. Sitting on a Beach by Calm – the title says it all. I can’t think of anything else I’d rather do while listening to this song. A hypnotic repetitive beat with samba undertones that makes me feel like I’m travelling even if I’m just sitting on my couch

15. Je Pense á Toi by Amadou & Mariam – The French language sounds so beautiful in this song and the tablas keep a steady rhythm. Makes me want to head to North Africa Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia…and it will always remind me of someone special.

16. I Got You by Vikter Duplaix – I only discovered Vikter Duplaix after I moved from London, but when I hear this song, I want to throw on my heavy coat and scarf and stroll through the streets of Soho and the S. Kensington.

17. Line by Portico Quartet – completely instrumental, jazzy, airy and trance inducing. Great song to have going as your flight takes off for your next adventure.

18. Dreams of 18 by Lal Merie – Lyrical vocals, sitars and tablas in the background – even though the subject of the song may be difficult, I can still get lost in the music.

19. Fun, Fun, Fun by Pharrell – This track reminds me to lighten up and just enjoy the trip – don’t take anything too seriously. Smile, laugh and eat some icecream.

20. Vilarejo by Marissa Monte – Vilarejo is the Portuguese word for Village and Miss Monte’s song transports me to one of those small Brazilian towns with dirt roads, local beer houses with yellow plastic Skol tables out front and houses with no beds but plenty of hammocks for whoever stays the night.
